The 2026 INSOL International Conference recently concluded in London, bringing together the world’s leading insolvency practitioners, academics, and members of the judiciary to discuss the evolving landscape of restructuring and recovery. The event also marked a significant milestone for the organisation as it launched a soft rebrand, centering its future vision on three core pillars: Collaborative, Cross-Border, Connected.

ARITA leads on the global stage

ARITA maintained a strong presence throughout the conference, most notably presenting at the Membership Association Meeting. This participation highlighted ARITA’s role as a global leader, with other international associations continuing to look to ARITA for world-best practice in professional standards and education. By contributing to these high-level discussions, ARITA helps define the next phase of restructuring and insolvency on both a national and international scale.

Bridging theory and practice

While networking is a vital component of international conferences, ARITA’s attendance at sessions like the Academics Colloquium provides deep academic and theoretical merit. This involvement ensures that ARITA is not only connected to the global community but is also able to learn from the theoretical side of international developments. These insights are then translated into practical applications that enhance the local practice of Australian practitioners and inform future professional development initiatives.

Volatility as the new norm

Many of the sessions cautioned delegates to expect that the current levels of economic and geo-political volatility should be expected to exist well into the future, and businesses would need to adapt their operations and risk measures to cater for this ongoing disruption.

AI and the evolution of investigations

Artificial intelligence was also a central theme of the conference, with discussions focusing on its inevitable impact on the profession. AI is becoming ubiquitous in areas such as litigation preparation and document review. Moving forward, AI is expected to cause a seismic change in insolvency investigations, particularly in detecting complex fraud, tracing financial flows, and reconstructing assets internationally. ARITA is currently considering how to provide leadership in this area through guidance on the responsible use of AI in professional judgment and reporting.

Innovative sessions: from ADR to outer space

The conference also featured forward-looking sessions on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and the burgeoning field of space insolvency. Chaired by Scott Atkins, the session on restructuring in outer space explored how the rapid commercialisation of the space economy is creating new and inevitable risks that we must be prepared to manage in the coming years.
